PURPOSE
This program is designed to provide the technical knowledge and skills needed for employment as an advanced medical coder. The coursework for the advanced level will offer an opportunity for existing coders to further their management, supervisory, auditing, or alternative coding skills.
OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Advanced medical coders work in hospitals, doctor’s offices, insurance companies, and government agencies.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Obtain and apply learned techniques pertaining to data collection
- Analyze, monitor and report performance improvement processes within the revenue cycle based on efficient collection and reporting of control information

- General college curricular admission and program-specific criteria
PROGRAM NOTES
In addition to the general college curricular admission requirements, students must meet with the program faculty for advising prior to enrollment. To be accepted into the Advanced Medical Coder program, students must have a professional certification from either the AHIMA (CCA or CCS) or AAPC (CPC).
COMPUTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT
Students in this program will meet the Reynolds computer competency requirement by successfully completing ITE 152 . Students can also meet this requirement by passing the Reynolds Computer Competency Exam, administered in the Testing Centers on each campus, in which case they will receive college credit for ITE 152 . Students not passing the Computer Competency Exam may retake the exam only once.
