PURPOSE
The Horticulture Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program prepares students for a wide range of horticulture careers. Individuals already in the green industry are invited to improve or upgrade their skills and knowledge with appropriate courses.
OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The program offers hands-on laboratory work and classroom instruction in landscaping (design/install/maintenance), floral design, and production of horticultural materials. Graduates own and operate independent businesses, and are employed by corporate, commercial, or governmental entities.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Apply proper nomenclature protocols for plants
- Identify common pests of ornamental plants
- Use proper methods in sexual and asexual propagation
- Demonstrate protocols for proper turf care in Central Virginia
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- General college curricular admission
- Students should meet with the department chair before registering, or early in their first semester of study
PROGRAM NOTES
Students in the Horticulture Technology AAS program must complete a basic core of specified horticulture technology and general education courses. In addition, in consultation with the department chair, students will select technical courses that match their career objectives.
Students who wish to transfer credits from other institutions must send official transcripts to the Office of the Registrar for evaluation.
COMPUTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT
Students in this program will meet the Reynolds computer competency requirement by successfully completing ITE 152 . Students can also meet this requirement by passing the Reynolds Computer Competency Exam, administered in the Testing Centers on each campus, in which case they will receive college credit for ITE 152 . Students not passing the Computer Competency Exam may retake the exam only once.
