Diesel Mechanics Technology C

PURPOSE: The Diesel Mechanics Technology curriculum is designed to introduce the fundamentals of diesel equipment repair and provide instruction in hydraulic systems, welding, diesel engine overhaul and tune-up, electrical circuits, power train maintenance, and fuel injection. The Diesel Mechanics Technology program will give graduates a practical background in basic diesel equipment technology principles. The curriculum provides practical training and the option of on-the-job experience through cooperative education. The demand for trained diesel mechanic personnel and technicians is increasing.

OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES: The Diesel Mechanics Technology curriculum prepares graduates for employment in any of the following occupations: Diesel Equipment Repair, Diesel Truck Repair, Supervisor, Shop Foreman, Heavy Duty Repair, Purchasing Agent, Salesperson, Power Train Repair, Fuel Injection Repair, Diesel Engine Repair, and Automotive Diesel Repair.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:  

  • Students gain hands on experience and knowledge with heavy duty transmissions, chassis, axles and the correct repair procedures for each.
  • Understand from hands-on experience the construction, design, and application of diesel fuel systems and their subsystems. Be able to identify various fuel systems, understand their operation, and know their service requirements.
  • Show an understanding from hands-on experience the construction, design, and application of selected modern diesel engines and their components. Including electrical systems, fuel systems, intake and exhaust systems.
  • Students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of basic AC systems, their components and operation, as well as show the safe and environmentally responsible methods of repair.
  • Students will have demonstrated the knowledge of be able to identify various types of hydraulic systems, system components, and understand the system’s schematics. Students should be able to safety disassemble and repair hydraulic cylinders.
  • Student must demonstrate their knowledge of basic electrical systems from a heavy duty vehicle. Know the basics of electricity and the safe testing procedures.
  • The Diesel Program prepares its student by giving them the basic knowledge they need to be a successful entry level diesel technician.
  • Understand the operation, design, construction, repair, and servicing of pneumatic and air braking systems as used in heavy-duty and public transportation vehicles.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: General college curricular admission

PROGRAM NOTES: Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the program head either before registering for their first semester or early in their first semester of study. Students will be required to furnish clear lens safety glasses, leather work footwear, and proper clothing for working in the lab.

COMPUTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT: Students in this program will meet the college’s computer competency requirement by successfully completing ITE 152 . Students can also meet this requirement by passing the college’s computer competency exam, administered in the testing centers on each campus, in which case they will receive college credit for ITE 152 . Students not passing the computer competency exam may retake the exam only once.
