Automotive Technology - Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Major - AAS (909-01)


PURPOSE: This curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for employment in the automotive repair industry as an apprentice-level, factory-trained technician.  Students will be trained in manufacturer-specific repair procedures using newer vehicles and OEM-specific equipment provided by the manufacturer.

OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Students will graduate as a certified Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)-based automotive technician who will be credentialed to work at a franchise OEM dealership.  This degree can provide opportunities to become a Master Technician, Shop Foreman, Service Manager, Parts Manager, or OEM-based Field Service Representative.  The industry credentials earned through this degree are nationally recognized.  

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

In addition to the general college admission requirements, following is required prior to admission into the program:

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Three-year, clean driving record (or no offenses if driving less than 3 years)
  • Able to fulfill all hiring requirements at a new car dealership service department and maintain a position at the dealer for the duration of the program
  • The OEM program is selective/competitive entry and students must meet with the Automotive Program Head prior to beginning any automotive courses in this program.
  • Students who are interested, but not ready to commit, can self-enroll in the SDV 101-Orientation to Automotive Careers online course.  This course is required for any of the Reynolds automotive programs, and also satisfies the college’s SDV 100 requirement.

PROGRAM NOTES: Currently, Reynolds Community College has the Toyota T-TEN  OEM program.  Successful students will graduate with an Associate of Applied Science Degree, two years of practical experience, industry certifications through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and receive OEM credentials as a certified technician.  This program is accredited through the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation and all instructors are ASE Certified Master technicians as well as OEM-certified instructors.  

Automotive OEM students will have 110 hours of face-to-face instruction and 15 hours of hybrid instruction for a total of 125 hours of required instruction.  Hybrid instruction includes asynchronous coursework.

COMPUTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT: Students in this program will meet the college’s computer competency requirement by successfully completing the SDV 101 - Orientation to Automotive Careers (Bridge)  and AUT 180 - Introduction to Dealer Operations  courses.
